This policy paper aims at presenting a legal study of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in the light of contemporary challenges.

The NPT was signed in 1968 by 40 States and came into effect in 1970. In 1995, after 25 years, it was extended for an indefinite period of time.

2020 marks its 50th anniversary, but the question here is: are we either celebrating or on the contrary commemorating this treaty? Has it proven its worth? Or is it now outdated? The next Review Conference will be a “historic occasion” according to the High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu.
